HBO to launch On Demand in the UK

14 02 2007

For the last couple of days, people have been searching my blog for HBO and Virgin, and I have been away from a PC thinking that this was down to Virgin’s recent rebranding exercise from NTL. But no, I missed something entirely. Virgin signed a deal with HBO to start a Video on Demand service in the UK, exclusively on the Virgin Media platform.

This channel will be free to anyone that chooses the top-tier package. It is widely acknowledged that when HBO do things right, they make programs that transcend the medium. I have lost track of the amount of times I watched Sopranos and forgot I was watching televison. The same with Band of Brothers.

If they promote this correctly, Virgin media could win themselves some subscribers. The launch line up includes Entourage, Six Feet Under and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and I am sure Sex and the City will pop up on there at some point. With HBO being paid directly through subscribers for this service, will they one day come to the conclusion that they no longer need to sell their shows internationally? and what of DVD sales, HBO’s boxsets being the most expensive things on the planet? Is this the end of acquisitions as we know it? Probably not.
