Friday Night Lights ratings horror

25 02 2007

The premiere of Friday Night Lights fell way below even the lowest of expectations. According to Media Guardian, the show was watched by just 26,000 people on ITV4 Wed night. I know more people than that. The abysmal figure can be attributed to live football (or Soccer as Americans like to call it) on Sky Sports, a great game between Barcelona and Liverpool, taking away what would be the core audience of the show. Which begs the question, why was it scheduled at that time in the first place? ITV know that the Champions League will have people hooked from now until May, why did they schedule a sports drama against sport? Do they like to waste money? Apparently so.

I was thinking that a couple more weeks of those kind of figures, and it would be moved to some graveyard slot to die. But ITV4 is a graveyard channel, how much worse can it get? If you haven’t watched it, do so. I promise you won’t regret it. Do I have shares in NBC Universal? Maybe.

“Can you digg it!” (in no way a reference to Bob the very competent Builder, but more The Warriors) Whats with the digg it feature I don’t digg that =p only kidding, but couldn’t you have called it something else like interest indicator hahahh

A real shame and another example of tv schedulers not really having a clue. Whatever audience they might have hit they just took them out of the equation.

Honestly, could they not employ tv bloggers even to act as a focus group. Hell knows I’d do it for free, if it meant that great shows were given a better chance to find an audience.

All we’re looking for is that the level and quality of TV rises and that we arent stuck with things like Primeval and Dancing on Ice all night Saturday. Although I must admit, the wife makes me spend ‘quality’ time together to watch Lee Sharpe prance about in lycra….

Dancing on Ice can be memsmerising. I have been at friends houses twice recently when its been on, and people can’t help but watch it and talk about it like they suddenly care about figure skating… its weird.

I wonder if ITV could apply that to other niche sports and get viewers attention. “Archery with the Stars”? “Celebrty Shot-putt”? Possibilities are endless for a Saturday night…
