The Simpsons turn 20

20 04 2007

20 years ago last night, The Simpsons made their debut on The Tracey Ullman show as a one minute short. I have been there from about Season 5, when the wonders of Sky satellite came into my house. That summer (93?, 94?) I watched every ep up to that point, and knew I had found the TV program for me. I have watched the golden years again and again on DVD, Channel 4, Youtube, I wrote about them for my university dissertation, and my tastes have changed immeasurably as I have grown older and (some would say) wiser. But this clip is as funny today as the first time I watched it. It was a close call (I’m on my way was a close second), but here is my favourite moment from the last 20 years. I think it encompasses everything that The Simpsons is about, and if you can’t take anything funny from it, you are dead to me. Seriously. Watch the video after the jump.

24 S06E15 – 8:00pm-9:00pm

28 03 2007

I’m sorry did Jack just quiz a mentally challenged person, and then send him out on a mission? Did two CTU workers just passionately kiss in the office and nobody bat an eyelid? Did the president just go from coma to potential bleeding on the brain to alive and ruling the country while looking like R.Kelly in the space of 13 minutes? Did the vice-president buy the boxset for 24 season 2 and just copy Alan Dale’s plan to overthrow the president?? and to top it all off, did someone I never met before today just incur the wrath of someone I don’t care about by double-crossing them???

I haven’t been reading the credits, who is in charge of this seasons 24? I want them to know that was the worst episode I’ve ever seen. It was like wading through quicksand. With broken glass in the quicksand. I may do the unthinkable and stop watching this season. I’ve seen enough to know what will happen in the next 9 episodes. Cynical Ed says that Ricky Shroder’s character dies a hero, nukes are stopped at the last minute going in both directions, Jack catches Gredenko and Audrey is alive. Watch this space.

NBC Universal and News Corp team up for “Youtube killer”.

23 03 2007

Remember when the networks gathered together and decided that they would build a competitor to Youtube, in an attempt to crush their dominance? Everybody laughed, and the news went away. WEll today at least two of those networks are still friends, and have announced a new online video distribution service. I can’t even be bothered to reword it, or be funny about it, I’m too tired right now (hence the less than funny title post) but I wanted to get the news out there. Read the Associated Press story after the jump.

Rambling about my impatience..

2 02 2007

I posted earlier last week about going legit, buying the TV I really like from iTunes and actually paying the people that matter when it comes to TV, the cast, writers and production company. But this week and the week after, two of my favourite shows will be on Sky One (yes, the actual telly) a mere 3-6 days after they air in the US. This presents me with a dilemma.

Matt Groening on the return of Futurama

2 02 2007

If there is one thing I am looking forward to on TV, it is the return of Futurama. I recently downloaded every episode, even though I have all but one of the DVD boxsets on my shelf. I did it so I can watch episodes in a little window while I write on my blog. My geekiness knows no bounds. God bless 20″ widescreen monitors!! By the way the episode where Fry tries to remember what he did to make Leela love him, awesome writing. Time Keeps on Slippin is the title. Back in the real world, the point of this post is to say there is an interview with Matt Groening about Futurama here.

Family Guy S05E09

31 01 2007

I was just watching this, wondering when was the last time it made me laugh out loud, and then this joke came along and cracked me up. Peter has his driving licence revoked, and so he has to stay home and entertain himself. After a failed attempt at integrating himself into the cast of Cheers, he decides to make up his own sitcom in his mind, complete with an upbeat 80’s theme tune. Watch the video after the jump.

I nearly went legit..

23 01 2007

This morning I almost packed it all in with Bittorrent and went straight. There were so many fake copies of Heroes on Mininova, and it was 8am and 24 hadn’t show up yet. The only thing that stopped me? Programs don’t show up on itunes for 24 hours after they are on air. Booooo! Can someone tell the production companies that this is a stupid idea. I know they do it to protect revenue that they earn from TV, but they just lost all my revenue this morning! When I get home, I’m going to download the hi-def version of all 3 for free. Because I can. Sort it out people.

24 – The first 4 episodes

16 01 2007

Well what can I say. 2 and a half episodes in, I was wondering if 24 could still surprise me, I had seen it all before. Every year the premiere of this show has managed to top the previous, but I was feeling a bit jaded by the first couple this time round. Muslim extremists with weapons of mass destructionIf you don’t want to read any spoilers, don’t read on.

A Pale Pale Shadow…

9 01 2007

Last night I watched the latest episode of The Simpsons, and that program has fallen off. Admittedly it is falling from the highest of heights, but that episode stank up the place!

There was one joke in 22 minutes that made me smile, it was something about Marge’s favourite show, and burning it to DVD, and downloading it to her ipod, it was one to chuchle at. But apart from that, nothing. A parody of “A Perfect Storm”? Have they been drawing this episode for 6 years?

It is a real shame to see this happening to this great, great program, but there is no end in sight. As funny as the trailers for the movie have been, all the signs point to the super-stupid Homer of recent years that is funny for some, but can’t be sustained over a single episode, let alone a feature-film. but I live in hope…

Get “Arrested” right now!

8 01 2007

So it’s Monday morning, you’re back at your desk, cursing life. I have a diversion for you! A while back, I reported that Microsoft had paid a tidy sum for the online rights to Arrested Development. Read the rest of this entry »

24 leaked…

7 01 2007

It had to happen, although I can’t quite understand how it did. Like the plot of a drama that takes place over the course of a single day, some sensitive material has fallen into the wrong hands, and they have used it for evil. The first 4 episodes of Season six of 24, along with a 15 minute preview of episode 5, have been uploaded onto the internet, and people are downloading it like crazy. Always one step ahead, those internet folk. Click here to feed your addiction if you can’t wait til next Monday on FOX in the US, the Sunday after on Sky One, or soon after that on Seven network in Australia. I believe the files also have Spanish subtitles, so thats another billion people covered! sweet!

The return of Futurama…

16 12 2006

…is imminent. It was great. Especially in the last season, when they knew they were getting cancelled. The writing and (voice) acting just got better and better. David x. Cohen gives an interview here, without giving too much away, about the episodes being prepared for 2008.

I need a “Hiro”.

30 11 2006

This week I watched some good TV. Same as last week. and the week before that. The highlights were Heroes, where Hiro Nakamura uttered the best line yet (Greato Scotto!) at just the right time. The Prison Break Fall finale was edge of the seat stuff, but the ending wasn’t as cliffhangy as previous episodes. (One thing about writing a blog is that you get to make up all the words you want). I just watched Veronica Mars, and one case was solved while another started. Much earlier than usual this season. Watch these three programs and you’re covered for laughs and drama, no need to watch anything else. Oh and 30 Rock. I need to laugh with someone else at the way Tracy Morgan says “Liz Lemon.”
