Lost S04E08 – Meet Kevin Johnson

22 03 2008

A little disappointing, I have to say. When it comes to Lost I like to do a little reading ahead, and I was led to understand that this episode would explain a few things about Michael, and what he has been up to. The answer is… not much.

His reasons for being on Widmore’s freighter don’t add up. So the basic idea is that to clear his conscience of the deaths of two innocents (Ana-Lucia and Libby) that he killed to save his son, he would goback to the island and kill a bunch of other people that he just met, to save the lives of those he betrayed on the island. That is remarkably flimsy. I think I would have preferred it if Ben had kidnapped Walt again. Read the rest of this entry »

Lost S04E05 – The Constant

1 03 2008

The best episode of Lost since the last time I wrote that. Seriously, that was easily the best treatment on time travel since Back to the Future, maybe even better because it doesn’t involve paradoxes (I think). Since an interview in the Summer when Matthew Fox was quoted saying that this was the season people would find out “not just where they are, but when they are“, I’ve been waiting for the explanation, but I had no idea it would be told so eloquently. Listen to Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse on this weeks official Lost podcast clear up any questions you may have on their interpretation on time travel.

My only question is, does that explain the flashbacks? And if so, are they all going to die of cerebral aneurisms over the next 36 episodes???

The other thing they clear up in the podcast is that because of the strike there will be only five new episodes this season, in addition to the eight already produced before the strike began. These five hours will condense what was originally a plan for eight episodes, but those three missing hours will be added onto season five for a total of nineteen episodes in 2009, followed by a final sixteen in 2010. So plenty to look forward to then… Click on to see two sneak peeks from next weeks Juliet-centric episode, the other woman. About time we found out about her past/present/future.

Top 10 Simpsons songs… ever!

15 07 2007

Blah blah blah, Simpsons movie coming out soon. Blah blah, reminiscing about the good old days, So without further ado, blah. Actually, before I start I want to give an honourable mention to Homer pouring beer down the sink, singing When I was 17. Its not the kind of big musical number that I was aiming for with this list, but I love it.

At 10, we start off easy with a song that I reckon half the “old skool” Simpsons fans may not have even seen, after giving up the show (or so they say) around Season 8/9/10. I’m not sure I remember the storyline, other than it involving a curfew, and a radio station run behind an advertising hoarding. And maybe some moonshine. No wait, that was a different, better episode. Anywho enjoy “Kids v Adults”, which is the title I’m giving this song.

Video of the Week – Lost plane crash remixed

17 06 2007

This weeks top video is from Lost. A Youtube user has re-edited the plane crash that started it all, but with all the perspectives we currently know about. So we have Jack and Rose in their seats, Desmond on a mission to “Push the Button”, and the others at their book club meeting. Enjoy it after the jump.

Lost S03E22-S03E23 – Through the Looking Glass

25 05 2007

I just this second finished watching it.  I am almost speechless, that was the sort of episode that made Lost the most talked about program on TV. For spoiler reasons, my thoughts after the jump.

Video of the Week – Couch Gags

19 05 2007

This Sunday Fox will air the 400th episode of The Simpsons. To commemorate that fact, my video of the week is 159 (or so) couch gags, which you can watch below. My favourite is the rest of Springfield coming into the room to sit in front of them.

Lost S03E21 – Greatest Hits

17 05 2007

There were some powerful scenes in this episode, I think I may have underestimated the acting ability of Dominic Monaghan, and the potential of Charlie “Driveshaft” as I like to call him (because I can’t remember his surname… all I can think of is ‘Bucket’). Now I know I am eating my words, because I’ve been waiting for Charlie’s death for a long time, but as the moment drew closer, I realised that i wasn’t as happy as I thought I would be, and maybe I would prefer Sayid and his needless exposition dialogue dead instead.

Anywho, as an episode it was quite good, not up to the standard of late, but that is understandable as there was a lot to set up for the 2 hour season finale next week. And then thats it. No more Lost until Jan 2008. So savour it, starting with the US and Canadian trailers, to your right. No, your right. There you are.

24 renewed for two more years

16 05 2007

As title. No comment needed. Other than to say that for the first time ever, I fell asleep watching 24 last night. I was flagging throughout, but the inevitable happened with 10 minutes left. I watched the missing 10 minutes this morning, and I will say that my dream was better. and less predictable. even though it involved me propositioning Gisele Bundchen and being rejected. And then waking up in a cold sweat.

EDIT:-

David Fury, he of the *surely* made up surname, has come out as the third producer of last years Emmy winning drama to criticise this years lame duck plots. He was quoted in TV week saying:

It’s been a very tricky year for us; it’s been very difficult. This is year six and you try to keep the plates spinning on this show. You try to keep things interesting, find new ways to tell the story, and unfortunately we wound up repeating ourselves somewhat.

You know what, when he puts it like that I feel a little sympathy. Four out of six good seasons isn’t bad. I’m going to lay off any producers that admit to failings in their shows. As of…. next week.

Lost S03E20 – The Man Behind the Curtain

11 05 2007

This episode brought back memories. The first was when I did a google image search to find a picture of John Locke. One website had a picture above a caption reading “The Man, the Legend” and I thought back to season 1, when this was a character worth watching, full of mystery and intrigue, and you couldn’t wait to see his next crazy move. Nowadays he is more like a predictable, shallow man who makes you cringe with every crazy move. The other thing I was reminded of was the rumour/fact that around the time of Lost’s inception, ABC told Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof that everything they did had to be able to be explained by science and technology available today. Which brings us to episode 20… I’m not sure even Einstein can explain Jacob to me.

The Simpsons S18E17 – Marge Gamer

23 04 2007

Remember that South Park episode 5 years ago called “Simpsons Already Did it”, where they rehashed a couple of Simpsons plots to prove that there is no point worrying about plaigarism in animation, because The Simpsons have done everything, and even borrowed plots themselves? No? Well I do.

Earlier last year (or maybe late last year, I forget) South Park wrote an episode about online RPG World of Warcraft, and its immersive effect on society and more accurately, the four main characters.

The Simpsons turn 20

20 04 2007

20 years ago last night, The Simpsons made their debut on The Tracey Ullman show as a one minute short. I have been there from about Season 5, when the wonders of Sky satellite came into my house. That summer (93?, 94?) I watched every ep up to that point, and knew I had found the TV program for me. I have watched the golden years again and again on DVD, Channel 4, Youtube, I wrote about them for my university dissertation, and my tastes have changed immeasurably as I have grown older and (some would say) wiser. But this clip is as funny today as the first time I watched it. It was a close call (I’m on my way was a close second), but here is my favourite moment from the last 20 years. I think it encompasses everything that The Simpsons is about, and if you can’t take anything funny from it, you are dead to me. Seriously. Watch the video after the jump.

Lost S03E14 – Expose

30 03 2007

That was the most chilling episode of Lost that I think I have seen. And as a result of this ep I take back one of my biggest criticisms of Season 3, Nikki and Paolo. They had a plan for these two all along, from the moment Paolo went to the toilet in the Pearl station and someone on Ain’t it Cool decided that they wanted him known as the “takes a shit” guy from that moment onwards.
